We all have a few things that we just can’t seem to tear ourselves away from. It adds time onto my writing but I have no regrets. We all need brain breaks, right? Here’s my top 5 from least distracting to greatest

5. Cleaning.

There is always cleaning to do. When I sit down to write if I see something I can sort out quickly, I will do it. Then once I start on that small task I find another thing, then another, and I have to remind myself that my story isn’t going to write itself.

4. The Outdoors.

I will, mid writing, get up and sit outside in the sun.Simply cuz I want some vitamin Sun splashed on my face.

3. Random things to research

I’ll get a thought, a tiny one and it may have nothing to do with my story, but I must know the answer right and there. So then I begin googling whatever it is. Sometimes it leads to 15 tabs open, but usually my curiosity is satisfied by the first open tab and I can return to my writing a bit smarter than when I left.

2. Messages and Phone calls

These get me. It’s like my closest friends know right when I sit down to write. That’s everyone decides to call and text me. I’m not sure why this happens. But I love hearing from them so it’s hard to ignore the calls and texts.

  1. Social Media

It’s my biggest downfall. I’ll click it open just to look at one thing and then, bam I’m scrolling. I think with Covid it’s been worse. It’s my escape and people are using it more now than ever. So… yea I’ve been using it a lot more too.

So there’s my list. I wonder if these 5 things will still be my distractions in 10 years.
