It takes me some time to feel confident enough to know if someone is trustworthy. Even then, some people are very good liars. Generally speaking, here are 10 ways to know someone is trustworthy.

Their words line up with their actions- They try their best to be consistent with their words and actions. If they say they are going to do something, they make their best effort to do it.

They use integrity- They are on their best behavior even when no one is watching.

They stay away from gossip- They don’t speak about others when others aren’t around. If they’re walking around telling so and so’s business that means they’re walking around telling yours.

They mind what they say- They say what they mean and they mean what they say.

They show empathy- They don’t brush off others feelings. They show understanding and if they don’t understand, they at least make an effort to.

They set boundaries and respect others’ boundaries- This is an important one. Someone who doesn’t understand boundaries doesn’t posses the skills to be aware of what is right and wrong.

They maintain healthy relationships in and out of the workplace- A little argument here and there is healthy, but if they are having drama in work or outside of work, there’s a chance they are untrustworthy. If they can’t seem to keep the drama away, there’s a good chance the drama is going to find its way to you.

They tell the truth. Even when it hurts- If someone goes out of their way to tell the truth with tears in their eyes or just really struggles to say it and says it anyway, that shows they’ll overcome their own fears to maintain trust.

They have a good track record- Some of your people, know their people and can vouch for them in some way.

Intuition- If you get a bad feeling about someone you’re probably right. Listen to your gut.

Now, we are all human, people can’t be all these things all the time. Sometimes we accidentally slip up, but I think what separates a trustworthy person is that they are accountable for their mistakes and apologize if they need to. They also learn from their mistakes and make changes in their daily lives, so it doesn’t happen again.

With all this being said, there’s still scumbags out there. There are people who put on a good face, have zero red flags, show up under all of the categories mentioned above and still, they turn out to be untrustworthy. It’s always good to be careful of new people, especially if they don’t have a history. If you find you’ve been mistreated by someone you felt you could trust, forgive yourself. You’re not wrong for trusting someone, they are wrong for taking advantage of your trust.
